6 on Saturday 30/12/17

Well I hope you all had a great Christmas and enjoying a well earnt break from just doing life, maybe your turkeys now all been eaten or maybe not!

Not had much time in the garden in the last week, spent a bit of time on the kids playhouse but still have bulbs to plant and plants to prune back but that will wait for a few days I think………

The end of the year for me is a time to look back and enjoy what’s happened in the last year and look forward to next year and that’s exactly what I am doing with my 6 on Saturday this week, taking a look back though a few months of this excellent meme and putting my favourite 6 back up for you to enjoy. Just feels right too me for some reason

So here’s the first

Geranium wlassovianum ‘Lakwijk Star’ another new plant for me, I love wlassovianum anyway, I find it such a great performer in gardens, the foliage is so attractive appearing in the spring, followed by a summer of flowers ended with a great display of autumn colour on the foliage, can’t wait to see this plant mature from 12/08/2017

Rosa ‘Louis XIV’ well for those who have followed my blog for a while, will remember this one from my rose watch and it’s still going so strongly now, must be on 5th flowering now, such a beautiful rich colour and brilliant scent and who said heritage roses only flowered once! From 22/7/2017

Tricyrtis formosana. This unusual perennial plant from Taiwan is to me the real sign that autumn has us in her grip! One of the latest plants the flower in our borders, the road lily doesn’t disappoint, holding these unusual shape flowers upright. It is at home in the soil here as well as loving the deep shade. The toad or snake lily certainly makes a talking point in any garden from 9/09/2017

My patio is finished! We always forget what a difference the hard landscaping can make to our garden, this has transformed the space into a more courtyard feel, with the pacing bringing out the best of the plants surrounding it. From 2/09/2017

We always think of roses worth growing just for their flowers but look at the autumn foliage! Rosa rugosa is a wonderful rose that colours up so well and if you are lucky, can have some massive hips as well from 18/11/2017

I love my alpines and also my fossils and mixing the two together in one beautiful pot is just ideal, more importantly, the fossils were collected on our holidays and will remind us about the time away and my 2 girls helped me to plant it up. From 4/11/2017

I hope you enjoyed my trip back though memory lane for my 6 on Saturday from both mine and a clients garden. If you did please checkout other people’s 6 on the memes founder website https://thepropagatorblog.wordpress.com/ I love seeing other people’s plants and what’s happening in their gardens. Why not give it ago yourself next week and give me a shout so I can take a look

And if I don’t see you before next weeks, I hope you have a very happy new year

Ah a trip down memory lane. I have been half thinking of getting a short-run book published (a glorified photo album really), once we’ve done a year. One double page per week with my pick of the best items from every ones six posts that week. No idea how much thst would be.

That’s a good idea, been thinking about something similar for plant of the week possibly for next Christmas, cost wise depends on the quality, did have a look for another project I am working on and that’s for a booklet type A5 size, photo quality paper and that was about 3.25 per unit with min run of 100

      1. cavershamjj says:

That’s not bad! Although I wont need a hundred. 20 should cover it. That’s if people even want a copy.

I think the smaller amounts do push up the price quite a bit but can email links to you once I open the work tablet, currently closed for Christmas and new year for health and safety reasons!

  2. Love the Tricyrtis. It’s a plant that amazes me each time I see it and each time I see it I make a mental note to plant it in my garden. Have now made a written note!

I seem to have expanded my collection of Geraniums this year. I can’t remember who’s to blame. 😉 Have several Tricyrtis babies in the greenhouse too. If they survive my inexperience I’ll be happy.

Ummm not too sure John 😂😂😂 they will survive in your more than capable hands I am sure 👍👍

  4. What a great idea to look back at all your triumphs Thomas! I love that patio! Great idea and I may join in without leaving my sofa! Happy days! It’s v stormy weather her in Wiltshire.

I discovered Tricyrtis thanks to you, twitter friends, all more than a year ago. These are wonderful flowers … On the other hand, your Geranium is really bright! (but what a crazy name, …difficult to pronounce…. )

They are beautiful aren’t they I love the geraniums 😀

I agree w/this being a great idea, & it was great fun seeing them again. I madly covert the toad lily, but can never get it to grow. Seeing yours prods me into trying again, hopefully w/better results. Now that I think about it, I wonder if the fox ate them before they had time to grow? Maybe I’ll follow John’s method & start them inside. Anyway, great six!

Thank you and so pleased you enjoyed the recap, yes well worth looking after them when young once established pretty tough plants

  7. Your rosa rugosa looks very healthy but mine has no leaves on at all and I am wondering what is going on underground. Do you think they are so robust they will thrive eventually or should I dig it up and move it? best wishes for 2018, Julie

    1. thomashort says:

Hi Julie, yes they are pretty tough plants indeed only thing they hate is heavy waterlogged soils 😀 the photo was from about 6 weeks ago, I hope you have a great 2018

  8. I like Tricyrtis formosana! I have a soft spot for all unusual plants.
Rosa ‘Louis XIV’ is amazing, such great deep colour! Truly beautiful!

    1. thomashort says:

It is such a deep colour isn’t, great Rose indeed 😀, I am a great fan of the toad Lilly, just added a couple of different forms into a garden I know they will do well in, the flowers close up are almost alien like
