Happy Saturday everyone, I hope those in the uk are all ok after both the Beast from the East And Storm Emma brought snow and cold weather, the snow has caused the country to shut down and also made our gardens a white clean delight trouble is, it’s covered everything including all the lovely little bulbs I was hoping to show you this week instead of what I am doing instead.
Let’s be honest trying to do anything in this cold spell in the garden is madness unless you have the delight of a greenhouse or lovely collection of house plants so why not just enjoy the white covering of your garden (and here’s mine) and enjoy what’s it’s done to the plants and how much it enhances the colour and shapes of plants.
Be warned just because your plant is covered in snow, doesn’t mean it will be safe. Last really snowy weather we had many many years ago, mice went though almost every Daphne odorata and ate the bark off them and killed them, so plants with sweet bark, it’s worth knocking the snow off!
There’s still time to buy bare root roses, so why not spend a little time choosing a couple of new roses for the garden as you can’t get out into the garden. Spend a little time looking, there’s some stunning old varieties that get over looked and they can be far better than most of the modern roses
Same with seeds, as I can’t get outside, I am sorting out seed order for a client and you can get some good bargains at this time of year and once ordered, there’s time to plan out where it all goes in the garden
Tidy up the tool shed is also a great idea, spend time removing all the soil off the tools, oil the metal parts and treat the wooden handles with a little bit of boiled linseed oil. Great time to fix that broken spade on the corner and is that 3 pronged fork really worth keeping? How’s the compost? Enough to pot on the seedlings? Always worth doing a little stock taking and making a list
Most of all enjoy the beauty that this snow gives us and wrap up warm! That said I am recovering from the flu that wiped me out earlier in the week so I am taking it easy š

I’m not finding much to enjoy about this weather but I haven’t yet reached the point of desperation where I’d tidy my tool shed. The only practical way for me to do that would be to throw a match in and shut the door.
That made me chuckle! I am glad itās not just my shed it that state, my vans tidish though……. thereās an ish please note
I’ve sorted the tool-cleaning problem. Easy. Just break all your tools (accidentally of course) over the winter and buy new ones. I did tidy the shed a couple of months ago. I may tidy it again once I’ve emptied it, which I’ll need to do to get inside. It’s all those bags of compost I bought after I did my stock take and made a list of what I needed.

I am spending this cold patch dreaming of roses – I planted a couple bare root last year and they seemed quite happy so this March am going to put in a few more including Charles de Mill and a Lady Hillingdon climber.
Oh 2 of my favourites, love them both, such great plants, much easier plant8ng them bare rooted as well isnāt
Some good advice there, Thomas, very little of which I have taken and now I am so behind I will be too busy to act on it next week! Next snowy spell, eh?

My rose cuttings ( and the climbing rose that you recommended to me a few months ago) have passed the difficult period we have had successfully, a bottle of water turned on each stem was needed to protect the new buds … I hope you have recovered from the flu and that you will soon return to the gardens

I ended up cleaning all my tools yesterday as I was bored! I need to get a few new roses so thanks for these sips Thomas. X
Lol itās a horride Job isnāt, I try and do it most times after using but I always forget and then have to have a good tidy up, garages are due to be started soon at home ā¹ļø

Lol you are so right it is very addictive, I thought I wonāt do it this week but just found myself putting it together this morning, itās nice seeing other peopleās gardens, donāt worrry a lot of mine are from work too

Glad you’re on the mend but rather than tidy your shed, you should continue to recuperate w/a few robust (stiff) drinks.
